This is an invitation for an architectural challenge to expand an existing Islamic community center with a prayer space of about 5,500 sqf, in Quincy, MA. The Muslim community is looking for design proposals to build an addition to the existing building -- either on top of existing structure using the entire footprint, or –as a second option- on top of the new parking lot (see image). The decision of location of expansion is left to participants. If winning designer is available and interested, we would be interested in continuing working on the project after competition.
Deliverables: - Floor plan showing the interior layout of the prayer space (1/8 In = 1 Ft). - Exterior elevations where relevant (1/8 In = 1 Ft). - Site plan showing building location, sidewalks, parking, and driveways - Interior and exterior perspective views where relevant

Young architects and designers are invited to submit work to the annual Architectural League Prize Competition. Projects of all types, either theoretical or real, and executed in any medium, are welcome. The jury will select work for presentation in public fora, an on-line installation, podcasts, and in an exhibition in June 2012. Winners will receive a cash prize of $1,000. A catalogue of winning work will be published by the Architectural League and Princeton Architectural Press. The Architectural League Prize is an annual competition, series of lectures, and exhibition organized by the Architectural League and its Young Architects + Designers Committee. Our back yard is a south-west facing area approximately 34'x43' in area. It gets a lot of sunlight and heat especially in summer. The space is dominated by a live oak tree. This tree keeps its leaves all year and then dumps them in spring when new growth comes in.
1.We want to turn this area into a livable space. 2.We want to maximize the shade from the tree. 3.We want the area to be low maintenance. 4.We see the use of planters to get plant color into the space. 5.The live oak tree will have to be given space to grow. 6.We expect that this project will be completed by end of April 2012.
