This competition is for an addition to a 6-bedroom cottage constructed in the 19th century.
It is unheated and is inhabited only 4 or 5 months of the year. No air conditioning either although there is an overhead fan on the first and second floors. Evenings in August can be hot and humid, so it would be nice to expand from the south-facing bedrooms over the southern porch roof and construct a sleeping porch, screened-in and roofed of course, replacing at least one of the windows with a door.
The plan drawing image shows the second floor plan with the addition shown in a red outline. This is the area -on top of the southern porch roof- where I intend the addition to happen. However, I am open for any alternative design suggestion, too.
I have also uploaded many more photos in additional documents [(+) tab on top]. Here you will find a zip folder with many more close up interior and exterior photos.
Deliverables: (1) Plan drawing showing the bedroom and proposed extension over the roof. Scale: 1/4"-1'0" (1/50) (1) Axonometric View showing the addition in relation to bedroom and southern porch underneath. (No need to draw entire building - only addition and proximate building components) Scale: 1/4"-1'0" (1/50)
Green approaches, and energy-efficient solutions are welcomed.
If you have any questions please write them on the project wall!

OPENGAP organizes this open ideas competition seeking for innovative, cutting-edge, contemporary, proposals, committed to a strategy of implementing architecture in a protected natural environment. Approaches should point to find synergies between nature and the building itself.
Participants are invited to find spaces that promote a deep understanding and assimilation of nature. Projects must lead through their architecture to sensitivity, awareness, understanding, enthusiasm and commitment to the natural environment around them.
Each participant or team will define the location of their Project; such as: natural parks, protected natural areas, forests, jungles, beaches, mountains, etc. However, the proposal must justify the choice of the location and the interaction reached between the project and the site’s environment.
The competition is open to all architects, designers, architecture students and to people around the world interested in the topic. Competitors can subscribe individually or as a team of maximum of 5 people.
The proposal submission will consist of two digital images in .jpg format, not bigger than 4MB each.

The Dow Chemical Company has long been committed to using chemistry to solve the world's energy challenges, combining the power of science and technology with the "Human Element" to passionately innovate what is essential to human progress.
In that spirit, Dow Solar has announced its sponsorship of The Dow Chemical Company Solar Design Competition. This international competition for the design of near-zero energy usage housing is open to students around the world studying architecture, engineering, industrial design, and other relevant design disciplines.
The Dow Chemical Company Solar Design Competition will serve as a global brain-storming exercise in which competitors cooperate in on-going dialogue and inspire innovation among one another. Given Dow’s leadership in the commercialization of new solutions to achieve near-zero energy homes, it the company’s hope that the ideas generated by this competition will extend far beyond its contestant population.
Dow's ability to develop solutions for the world's pressing energy and climate change challenges is built on the know-how we've used to transform our own global operations. As one of the world's largest industrial consumers of energy, we're living proof of how enhancing energy sources, optimizing use and minimizing losses can provide real and sustainable benefits. Our pioneering leadership in energy efficiency has led to a 38% reduction in energy intensity since 1990, saving nearly 1,700 trillion BTU. As a result of our corporate energy efficiency and conservation program, we have prevented more than 90 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

INTRODUCTION The parking structure has captured the imagination of novelists, photographers and film-makers, an yet it remains peripheral to our culture - best understood as forbidding fictional setting or often as an imposing silent building that we encounter along the way.
Car parks are not very appreciate by users (too cold, too dark, too insecure etc.) and this competition hopes to offer a new take on this type of building that is far too quiet.
Hong Kong situated on China’s south coast and enclosed by the Pearl River Delta and South China Sea, is renowned for its expansive skyline and deep natural harbour. And with a population of seven million people, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated areas in the world. Much of Hong Kong’s terrain is hilly to mountainous with steep slopes of which less than 25% of the territory’s landmass is developed and about 40% of the remaining land area is reserved as country parks and nature reserves.
AIM OF THIS COMPETITION The aim of this International competition is to design an iconic and Alternative Car Park Tower in the heart of Hong Kong. The new tower will include several possibilities for events such as concerts, art exhibitions, fashion shows, ceremonies dinners, cinematic projections, etc.
The architecture of this new building should reflect contemporary design tendencies, standing out for its uniqueness as a car park design, while meshing in with the surrounding Hong Kong urban tissue. This competition hopes to achieve the following: _Encourage and reward design excellence on a large scale, which integrates function, structure, details, etc. _Research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing an original car park incorporating an alternative program. _To generate the discussion of ideas regarding car park security and all the phobias associated with it such as fear of dark, dirty, cold, etc. _Encourage the employment of sustainable design in all aspects of the proposal.
COMPETITION STRUCTURE This is a single stage Competition with the aim of identifing the most appropriate proposal, which best satisfies the general and specific objectives of the contest.
This is an open international competition hosted by [AC-CA] to generate progressive contemporary design ideas. There are no plans for the Alternative Car Park Tower to be built.
This is an International Competition and is open to all architecture students Worldwide. We are accepting graduate architecture projects from students who have recently graduated or are currently graduating in the field of architecture (see for further eligibility information). The deadline for submission is August 31st 2011 at 6pm (GMT+1). All projects submitted after this time will not be considered for the Graduate Architecture Prize of 2011, you will however be eligible for next year's competition in August. Please note that by submitting your project you give GraduateArchitecture.com full rights to use and distribute the work to third parties and for publication, however you will always be the owner of your work and at all times be credited for your work.

We encourage you to provide text in your own language as well, to reach a larger audience. If you do submit a project written in your native language, please include a clear and concise summary in English.

It can be any combination of letters and/or numbers (please keep in mind it is only for a reference so make up a code you can remember). This code does not need to be on your presentation panels but do name the .PDF with your code (example: John_Doe_ABC01.pdf)

(Dimensions height: 270 x width: 350 pixels for the first thumbnail and height: 390 x width: 780 pixels for the second). (served as a guideline, its design is fully up to you as long as you include all necessary information and limit the dimensions of 270 x 350 & 390 x 780 pixels).
