ControlMad Advanced Design Center (Spain) is pleased to announce and organize the "2011 ControlMad International Design Competition: For Your Shoes".FYS The competition invites designers, architects and students to investigate new ideas and concepts for an object or system, that could simply store shoes. It should be a functional, well-designed piece of furniture to store footwear or shoes.

FYS starts as a way of solving a problem present in many houses and young people’s living areas. Nowadays, we have many types of storage furniture for many things, but shoes and footwear have long been neglected. All too commonly they are pushed into the bottom of a wardrobe, at the floor of the entrance or outside, to the balcony. FYS looks for participants, to give shoes a place, a thophy showcase almost, that is more than just a storage piece of furniture, but rather gives them the display they deserve.

PUBLIC ARCHITECTURE | IDEA COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS

Fentress Global Challenge is an annual international competition created to engage students worldwide in the exploration of future design possibilities in public architecture. The competition theme changes each year to reflect current issues. For 2011, students around the globe are invited to envision the Airport of the Future.

Winning students will receive cash prizes and gain international exposure. Top design concepts will be exhibited online and in the Airport of the Future section of the international touring exhibition Now Boarding: Fentress Airports and the Architecture of Flight, which will offer a multi-media immersion into the past, present and future of airport design. It will open in North America in the summer of 2012, and will travel internationally through 2015.

BACKGROUND

This competition will showcase imagined possibilities in airport design. Your goal is to advance the concept of what the future could be… it’s an exciting and limitless destination.

Technological innovation and sociological expectation constantly drive design forward, and airports are on the cutting edge of this thrust. The aviation industry plays an integral role in the global economy with 2.4 billion passengers, 43 million tonnes of freight, supporting 32 million jobs and US$3.5 trillion in economic activity annually across the globe. And the industry is growing. By 2050, it is estimated that 16 billion passengers and 400 million tonnes of freight will be flown each year.1
1ATA Vision 2050 - Shaping Aviations Future

In the early days of air travel, airports were called “flying fields” and were little more than grassy strips with a small holding area for passengers. In the late 1950s, as travel by air became more affordable, airport design advanced to handle larger crowds and heavier planes. The airport construction boom of the 1960s brought with it a romantic architectural style that mirrored the mystique of air travel, and passengers would dress in their finest clothing to dine at the airport restaurant before boarding.

From the 1970s to the mid-1990s, however, airports became “people processors” and the romance was gone. Increased regulations and terrorist attacks turned glass windows into opaque walls, and the need for rapid airport expansion with limited budgets resulted in uninspired design. A traveler could anticipate few opportunities for fast food dining, let alone gift shopping, entertainment or relaxation. Airports had become places to get through, rather than be in.

In the last 15 years, airports have experienced a resurgence of inspired design. Beautiful terminals with high-end retail and amenities make a traveler’s layover more pleasant and allow airlines to keep ticket costs down. Globalization is rapidly expanding the need for new airports and airport cities. These future airports will be the cornerstones of tomorrow’s economy, shaping emerging regions in the same way that cities of the past were shaped by their access to seaports and railways.

What is the future of airport design? How will the Airport of the Future look and function? The 2011 Fentress Global Challenge invites you to answer these questions through design.

GUIDELINES
Participants are encouraged to explore the topic in a variety of ways and take into consideration multi-layered elements, including urbanization, globalization and innovations in materials, technologies, aesthetics, flexibility, security, adaptability, and traveler experience from “curbside to airside.”

There are no restrictions on site, program or size. However, the proposed design must address the context of a site by showing its location in the world, positioning of the building(s) on the site, and how the design responds to and impacts the site. The objective is to maximize the ability of participants to propose imaginative conceptual design ideas for the Airport of the Future.
ELIGIBILITY
  • Fentress Global Challenge is open to graduate and undergraduate students actively enrolled and pursuing an architecture or engineering degree, as well as 2011 graduates.
  • Students must provide proof of active enrollment status. Registrants are required to provide a scanned copy of your student ID and current course schedule. Recent graduates of 2011 must provide a scanned copy of diploma.

Description
Hong Kong is one of two “special administrative regions” in the People’s Republic of China. The other is the old Portuguese colony of Macao. In these two special administrative regions the administrative model known as “one country, two systems” is applied. This system, which was developed by Deng Xiaoping, who intended to apply it to an eventual reunification with Taiwan, consists of the maintaining of a capitalist economic system under the sovereignty of a country governed by an official communist party (which is the case of present-day China and has been for a many years). In addition to their economic system, these two regions maintain an independent administrative and judicial system, as well as their own customs system and external borders.
In addition, Hong Kong is an emporium characterized by international banking, a liberal economy and liberal attitudes towards sex. Yes, sex. Because Hong Kong is an enclave for “yuppies” and foreign executives, the sex industry, nightclub scene and luxury hotel market represent an enormous attraction for many executives.
And that it why ARQUITECTUM has chosen for this competition the famous “red light” district of Mong Kok (Portland Street). And we have decided to tackle a thorny but nevertheless very interesting subject: a “Luxury Adult Club-Hotel”, where eroticism comes together with architecture, demonstrating in this way that architecture is relevant to all aspects of life and any project can be resolved in an interesting and creative manner when planned from the very beginning.

STUDENT-BASED

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITIONS

"VERSATILITY"

Already more than a decade into the 21st century, changes in technology are occurring so rapidly that one can feel like they are standing in a rushing stream of information and innovation. Yet, within the fields of architecture, construction and engineering, current economic conditions have down-scaled projects around the globe, However, in spite of the adverse financial climate which continues to hang like a gray cloud overhead, positive developments have come about in the design\build industry out of our need for better discipline in design. Purposeful research and greater public awareness have brought an intense focus on sustainability, adaptability and “versatility.” Versatility is defined as having varied uses or serving many functions or capable of or adapted for turning easily from one to another of various tasks, fields of endeavor, etc. Tall buildings, for one, are being re-imagined as vertical communities with multi-use spaces and functions able to serve evolving needs and changing desires throughout its lifetime. With this in mind, “Versatility” was chosen as the theme for the 2012 Mock Firms International Skyscraper Competition.

ABOUT THE COMPETITION

Entering its 4th year, the Chicago-based Mock Firms Architectural Competition is already highly regarded on the landscape of student-based design competitions. The Mock Firms model aims to help facilitate the formation and function of simulated-architectural design firms by collegiate and secondary school students. The desired outcome is to foster collaborative and cooperative educational experiences which may better prepare participants for a workplace environment which values these and similar values. This competitive event continues to bring together some of the best and brightest talent from the U.S. and around the world. Additionally, these future design professionals are given the unique opportunity to interact with the industry's leading design\build professionals as they pitch their design concepts directly to them receiving immediate feedback and evaluation of their work.

THE VENUE FOR FINAL PRESENTATIONS

Chicago, Illinois will be the site of the 2012 Mock Firms Competition final presentations. The tentative location for this event is the Congress Hotel and Plaza Convention Center on beautiful and historic Michigan Avenue.

DESIGN OBJECTIVE

To organize a “mock” design\build firm for the purposes of conceiving, coordinating, constructing and commercializing a mixed-use tall building or single-family residence which accommodates senior-living for the appropriate designated venues.

2012 PROJECT SITE DESIGNATIONS

Beijing, China has been selected as the site for the Collegiate Division of the Int'l Skyscraper Challenge

Detroit, Michigan has been selected as the site for the High School division of the Nat'l Skyscraper Challenge

QUALIFYING PARTICIPANTS

To qualify for participation in the 2012 Mock Firms Competition,

  • applicants must be enrolled students full-time or part-time students in secondary, post-secondary or graduate academic institutions.

  • mock firms must be no less than 2 students, but more than 5 (4 being the target maximum with an option for a 5th additional partner)

  • participants must submit a preliminary (may not contain specific individuals or final firm name) or final application form by given deadline along with the designated registration fee and a 1 - 3 page proposal for each design project

CHANGES FOR 2012!

Firms can take advantage of an additional partner (a possible total of 5 student participants)

Preliminary sketches will NOT be required for registration, but are to be included in materials submitted for final presentations.

PROCEDURE FOR NON-ATTENDEES!!!

As previously mentioned, it is anticipated that some registrants will not be able to make the trip to Chicago for a variety of reasons. In consideration of this, we want those of you to whom this might apply to know that our determination is to make every effort to assure your project receives an equal assessment with those present. One of the ways we seek to accomplish this is to permit non-attendees the use of additional materials to help fill in the gaps which might result from not being able to vocally explain your design. Details of what the these exceptions are will be available in the Design Brief.

PREVIOUS YEAR RESULTS

Nearly 40 registered student-firms

Over 100 individual participants

Over 20 academic institutions

From 4 countries

Over $2,000 in prizes awarded
